Preparing for Your VYJUVEK Treatment

Cleansing & Bathing

Bathing considerations before applying VYJUVEK

During the clinical studies, patients did not bathe prior to VYJUVEK application, so remember, bathing first is not a requirement. Choose what works best for you. Patients have shared that it often works well for their schedule to apply VYJUVEK after a bath or shower. Here’s what’s important to keep in mind:

  • Before applying VYJUVEK, the wound area(s) you are treating should be free of medicines, ointments, drainage, scabbing, and dead skin as much as possible, without causing additional wound damage
  • Before applying VYJUVEK, it may be helpful to use saline wipes or rinses to clean wound area(s)
Salt or Epsom Salt

Adults: Add 2 pounds of salt to 40 gallons of tub water or a half‑filled bathtub.

Babies and Infants: Add 5 teaspoons of salt to each gallon of bath water.

Saltwater or epsom salt baths do not impact how VYJUVEK works and can be taken prior to application without the need for rinsing.

Keep in mind: Using bleach and vinegar before VYJUVEK application can reduce how well VYJUVEK works.

If you aren’t able to avoid using bleach and vinegar 24 hours before application, make sure you rinse thoroughly with saline or plain water to remove these products from your wound prior to application.

Bleach

Diluted bleach in bathwater can be beneficial in improving the skin barrier and reducing itching.

Small amounts of bleach (1/2 cup in a 40-gallon bathtub of water, or 1 teaspoon in a gallon of water for localized soaks or compresses) do not affect how VYJUVEK works if you rinse after bathing.

Vinegar

Acetic acid solutions (2 gallons of 5% acetic acid white vinegar for a 40-gallon bathtub) can help to reduce Pseudomonas, a frequent colonizer of DEB wounds.

Vinegar solutions at this concentration do not affect how VYJUVEK works if you rinse after bathing.
